Vacheron Constantin: Heritage models in new versions

The Historiques collection, dedicated to Vacheron Constantin’s creative archetypes, highlights the wealth of the technical and aesthetic heritage of the Manufacture through contemporary reinterpretations. New models are now reviving three icons much sought-after among collectors. We are looking today at the Cornes de vache 1955, inspired by a legendary 1955 chronograph, reinterpreted in pink gold.



Embodying a singular blend of creative boldness and rigorous technical standards, this classic watch fitted with its distinctive “cow horns” lugs, which gave the chronograph its name, was inspired by the first water-resistant chronograph designed by Vacheron Constantin in 1955. The vintage icon is reinterpreted in pink gold, in keeping with the spirit of the 1950s, the era that sparked its creation.
Combining tradition, disruptive design and technical sophistication, the Historiques Cornes de vache 1955 chronograph embodies a stylistic originality typical of Vacheron Constantin. It expresses the unconventional creativity of the Manufacture in the 1950s through its stylised lugs creating an aesthetic tension with the traditional chronograph construction with two round pushers.

The silver opaline dial of the Vacheron Constantin Historiques cornes de vache 1955 is punctuated by applied numerals and hour-markers. The seconds hand in the centre as well as the hand of the 30-minute-counter at 3 o’clock are blue, enhancing the chronograph functions. A tachymetric scale on the dial allows the wearer of the watch to calculate speeds.



Equipped with a column wheel shaped like a Maltese cross, the emblem of the Manufacture, the calibre 1142 drives the hours, minutes and small seconds as well as the chronograph functions while ensuring a 48-hour power reserve. It bears also the Hallmark of Geneva. The entirely hand-decorated manual-winding movement is revealed through the transparent back of the 38.5 mm-diameter case which is water-resistant up to 30 metres.

Quartzo vs. Mecânico / Precisão vs. Paixão

Quando, nos anos 70, surgiram os relógios de quartzo, a indústria relojoeira suíça foi apanhada desprevenida: aquilo que vendia era precisão e nesse capítulo, qualquer relógio de quartzo barato, proveniente do Japão, era mais preciso do que qualquer dispendioso relógio mecânico produzido na Suíça.
Foi preciso esperar pelos anos 80 e pelo génio de Nicolas Hayek para a indústria relojoeira suíça reencontrar o seu rumo e, com ela, todo o setor relojoeiro. Hoje, o mundo dos relógios é o que é graças a Hayek, mas a mesma questão que surgiu nos anos 70 mantém-se: porquê comprar um relógio mecânico quando podemos ter um de quartzo, mas barato e mais preciso?
A resposta, como em tantas outras questões relacionadas com o luxo, não é simples. Mas é a mesma que leva os audiófilos a preferirem complicados gira-discos e amplificadores a válvulas quando é possível demonstrar facilmente que um leitor de CDs e um amplificador a transístores são mais eficazes (mas precisos) na forma como reproduzem a música.
Quem ama a música nunca deixará de jurar que o vinilo soa melhor do que um CD (mesmo que isso não seja verdade) e quem ama os relógios jamais trocará um relógio mecânico por um de quartzo. Há nisto algo de luxúria pelos mecanismos, embora haja espaço para todos: o mesmo aficionado da relojoaria poderá ter na sua coleção, a par de incríveis mecanismos suíços, não menos excelentes exemplares com movimentos de quartzo.
Até que ponto os movimentos de quartzo são mais precisos do que os mecânicos? Basta dizer que um bom movimento mecânico com certificação de cronómetro tem uma precisão que pode oscilar no máximo entre -4 e +6 segundos por dia, enquanto um movimento de quartzo topo-de-gama, como o calibre Seiko 9F usado nos Grand Seiko (na foto acima, à esquerda, ao lado de um mecanismo Valjoux 7750), oferece um desvio máximo de 10 segundos... por ano! Relógios de quarto na casa dos €100 a €200 oferecem uma precisão inferior, da ordem dos 15 a 20 segundos por mês, que mesmo assim é superior a qualquer cronómetro mecânico.
No entanto, se até aos anos 70 a indústria relojoeira suíça vendia precisão, hoje vende outros tipos de valores: marca, origem, tradição, manufatura, paixão... Tal como os diamantes, há uma ideia de que um relógio mecânico é para sempre, pois os mecanismos podem (quase) sempre ser reparados e, no limite, um relógio pode durar várias gerações.
O slogan que melhor condensa esta ideia é o da Patek Philippe, um dos melhores representantes da chamada alta-relojoaria: You never actually own a Patek Philippe, you merely look after it for the next generation.

Há imensas razões para comprar um relógio. E admito que, no mundo dos relógios baratos, a estética tem uma grande prioridade sobre outro tipo de considerações – razão pela qual é na gama de relógios abaixo de 100 euros que mais encontramos relógios “de moda”, muitas vezes coloridos e em plástico, quase sempre produzidos a partir de movimentos baratuchos feitos na China.São, de alguma forma, relógios "descartáveis”, uma tendência criada originalmente pela Swatch e que depressa foi copiada pelo resto da indústria: o relógio é suficientemente barato para não pensarmos muito no momento da compra e ainda menos quando chegar o momento de o substituirmos por outro… igualmente barato. Acontece que nos tempos que correm, mesmo 100 euros é dinheiro. E a minha ideia é simples: porquê gastar 100 euros (por vezes até mais) num relógio descartávelquando o mesmo dinheiro compra um relógio de design intemporal que nos pode servir durante muitos e longos anos?
É por isso que gosto tanto de marcas como a Seiko, a Citizen, a Timex ou a Casio. Nas suas extensas gamas encontram-se relógios que considero verdadeiras abominações mas somos igualmente confrontados com muitos modelos interessantes – e mesmo que aquilo que eu considero “interessante” não seja universal, certamente haverá algum modelo que lhe irá agradar a si, que lê este blog.
Para ilustrar o meu ponto de vista escolhi o Casio MTP-1228D-1AVEF, disponível igualmente numa variação com o mostrador em branco. Trata-se de um clássico dress watch de três ponteiros e indicação de dia e data, uma conjugação muito do meu agrado. A imagem não nos dá escala, mas o relógio é relativamente grande, com uma caixa em aço de 40mm de diâmetro e bracelete igualmente em aço.
A resistência à água é de 5 atm (50 metros) e o vidro mineral é indicado como sendo “resistente aos riscos”, embora isto seja uma características que eu normalmente não atribuo a nada que não seja vidro de safira. O movimento de quartzo da Casio tem uma precisão superior a 1 segundo por dia (+/- 20 segundos/mês), normal para relógios desta gama.
O que não é normal é que este é um dos modelos da marca cuja bateria dura… 10 anos! Para mim, é a cereja de um apetitoso bolo que se vende por apenas 60 a 70 euros (valor médio encontrado online) – o preço de um relógio descartável num modelo que foi feito para durar uma década sem sequer termos de gastar dinheiro na bateria.

A empresa alemã Stowa já aqui foi referida anteriormente a propósito de um outro relógio desta mesma linha Antea.

O mostrador tem vidro de safira.
Além da execução simples e elegante ao melhor estilo Bauhaus, a principal originalidade consiste num ponteiro de segundos de pequenas dimensões num sub-mostrador às 6H00. O preço é de €650.

Os movimentos Kinetic começaram por ser a ideia da Seiko de conjugar a precisão do quartzo com a energia gerada por um rotor como nos movimentos automáticos. Este modelo, com a referência SRG019P1, utiliza o calibre 5D22 da Seiko, o qual oferece uma autonomia de 30 dias – interessante quando sabemos que as implementações originais dos primeiros Kinetic não iam além dos 3 dias. O indicador “Direct Drive” às 9h00 dá-nos não apenas a leitura da reserva de marcha, mas também o estado da geração de energia e quantidade de energia gerada.

Todo o relógio é do meu agrado, com proporções muito boas e um desenho simples e elegante. A caixa em aço tem 45mm de diâmetro e uma resistência à água até 100 metros, o que justifica de alguma forma a presença de um bisel para controlo de tempo de mergulho. O mostrador é protegido por vidro de safira antirreflexo; a bracelete em aço possui um fecho tipo borboleta de desencaixe rápido com dois botões de mola.

O preço de referência, no website britânico da Seiko, é de £499. Contudo, encontrei-o à venda na Amazon espanhola por bastante menos: cerca de 510€, o equivalente a £370.

IWC Unveils Diamond-Adorned Automatic Midsize Portofino Watches

Last week in Hong Kong, a very important watch exhibition took place: Watches & Wonders 2014. Here, top watch brands unveiled their newest creations – watches that will make their way to the individual markets some time later this year or early next year.

Earlier this week we discussed what it means for a watch to be shock resistant. That concept is being played out in the heat of competition this week at the US Open Tennis Championships in New York, as certain famed players are wearing top watch brands on and off the court.

'Sacred' Exhibit at the National Watch & Clock Museum Looks at the Religious Concept of Time

There is an enticing exhibition taking place until the end of the year at the National Watch & Clock Museum. Entitled Sacred, the exhibit focuses on the symbolism and religious concepts of time. The museum, home to America's largest timekeeping collection, is located in Columbia, Pa., and has an impressive collection of watches and clocks — with revolving special exhibits such as this one.

Die Seriennummer suggeriert ein Datum von 88, 98 oder 2008, und basierend auf dem Design würde ich vermuten, dass 98 die wahrscheinlichste ist. Die vollständige Modellnummer lautet Y167-0A40.

Es gibt sehr wenige Links online mit Conran und Y167, aber eine der Uhren zum Verkauf in Japan erwähnt, dass es Terence Conran ist, also muss ich zu diesem Zeitpunkt annehmen, dass sie korrekt sind. Sir Terence Conran wurde 1931 geboren und ist Designer, Gastronom und Schriftsteller. Auf meinem Weg nach draußen habe ich mir eine meiner vielen Boy London Uhren geschnappt, und wieder ist dies eine mit einem anderen Stil!

Dieses Modell hat die Nummer B131 und ist eine 3-Zeiger-Design-Quarzuhr. Das Zifferblatt ist völlig anders als alle anderen Boy London-Modelle und verfügt über keine der normalen Formen, Symbole oder sogar Stile, die ich zuvor gebloggt habe. Diese Uhr hat ein bedrucktes Gesicht, das wie ein Foto von einem Muster aus Nieten und Kugellagern aussieht. In kleiner Schrift zwischen dem Muster ist der Name Boy London, und das ist es für das offensichtliche Branding.

Die Rückseite ist ein Entwurf, den ich vorher gesehen habe, mit dem Symbol B von der Linie B für Junge, die sie freigegeben haben. Die Rückseite hat auch den Text Boy London seit 1976 und bezieht sich auf das Datum, als Stephanie Raynor die Marke in London gründete (-for mehr Markeninfo, sehen meine anderen Jungen-London-Pfosten). Die einzige andere Information auf der Uhr zeigt, dass es eine Edelstahlrückseite, japanisches Uhrwerk hat und 3atm wasserdicht ist.

Das Datum ist eines der harten Dinge, die mit diesen Uhren gemessen werden müssen, da es nicht immer mit den Schlüsseldaten für die Marke übereinstimmt. Der Versuch, es mit dem Design zu datieren, hat mich auch verwirrt, da ich nichts Ähnliches gesehen habe, aber wenn ich raten müsste, würde ich frühe 00s sagen ...
